Incoming changes to fire safety regulation

It’s a busy time for the fire engineering industry. The Fire Safety Bill has received its first reading in both the Commons and the Lords and may progress through to Royal Assent in early 2021. This bill amends the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and will require residential building owners to better assess the contribution of external walls and apartment front doors to the safety of their buildings.

At the same time, a draft of the Building Safety Bill has been released, although it is yet to go before parliament. This bill may have a much greater impact on fire engineering and on the construction and real estate industries. It attempts to codify the recommendations of the Hackitt report into the Grenfell fire, and includes wide ranging changes to the way that construction projects are managed and regulated as regards fire safety, as well as general building safety. The impacts are still being assessed, but the Hackitt themes of better regulation in the construction industry and improved competence at all levels are key.

With the launch of CHPK Fire Engineering alongside its affiliated company CHPK and CHPK Act Building Control at this pivotal time in the industry, CHPK is uniquely placed to remediate extant buildings and bring forthcoming construction projects into line with the draft Building Safety Bill.
